Your own personal Mission Statement

These notes were taken during a Chuck Goetschel Speech at the TEAM Leadership convention in November (?) of 2007...

Priorities for Success:

1. Define your destination

The two most important dates in your life are

  • (1) The day you were born, and
  • (2) The day you figure out WHY you were born.

What is your future destination? How often do you go to the airport and buy a plane ticket without knowing your destination? Our lives should be the same, we need to know and plan for our destinations so that we don't get stuck somewhere that we don't want to be.

And remember, when choosing your destination, "be a meaningful specific, not a wandering generality"

2. Set your priorities so that you will successfully reach that destination.

Read Eat That Frog!: by Brian Tracy

Write a personal Mission Statement:

-pick the three most important values in life to you(ex. Peace, Integrity, Joy, Status, Influence, Happiness, Spirituality, Friendship, Family, Authenticity, Acceptance, Legacy, etc...). Now write down how, at the end of your life, you will know that you have succeeded in being a person of that specific value. Begin each sentence with "Success to me means that..."

With every decision you make in life, ask yourself "How is this moving me toward my final destination in life, my Mission?"

3. Stay the course

The most important thing to remember is to continue to carry out a goal long after the emotion of the goal setting is past.
Periodically ask yourself, "Is my current behavior supporting my personal mission?"

Read the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey
In this book, Covey teaches about figuring out what is most Important in your life, and doing it. He reminds us to spend time accomplishing the important things in our lives, rather than the urgent ones. It is the important ones that will help us accomplish our Mission.

Always remember to W.I.N. - do What's Important Now
